MINUTES

UTILITIES COMMISSION MEETING

AUGUST 25, 1997

Mayor Margo G. Bailey called the meeting to order at 7:40 p.m. In attendance were Councilmembers Harrison C. Bristoll, Jr., Thomas A. Gross, Sr., Mabel Mumford-Pautz and J. Brian Kirby, Medford Capel, Utilities Commission Manager, W. S. Ingersoll, Town Manager, Joan Merryman, Stenographer, and guests.

Mayor Bailey asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes of the previous meeting. Mr. Bristoll moved that the minutes of the meeting of July 21, 1997 be accepted as presented, was seconded by Mrs. Mumford-Pautz and carried unanimously.

Mayor Bailey announced that the Utilities Commission has cash on hand and in bank as of August 25, 1997 of $312,477.74.

Mayor Bailey called on Mr. Capel for his report. Mr. Capel reported that there was a break in a 6" water main by the Hospital on Sunday and it has been repaired. He said one of the grinder pumps in Washington Park went out and it has been repaired and will be reinstalled. He said a buzzer has been installed on the Kent Street pumping station which will take the place of the red light that had been there. He said the light was continually destroyed so they put in the buzzer.

Mr. Capel reported that they have cleaned out the chlorination chamber at the lagoon and removed the heavy amount of sludge which had accumulated. The accumulation of sludge caused a high coliform count and that has been taken care of.

Mayor Bailey asked how our water supply was holding up with the dry weather. Mr. Capel said we have not had a problem and he did not foresee any problem as long as the pumps hold up. He said we did have a problem with the filters on the deep well and had to replace some green sand in the filters.

Mayor Bailey asked if there were any questions. Mr. Gross said he had been asked about problems with standing water at the foot of High Street during the rains. Mr. Capel said he did not know of any problem there; the tide comes up into the drain area between the road and Widehall.

Mr. Chaze asked how many homes were affected by the water main break. Mr. Capel said no homes were affected and since the College was not in session and it was Sunday the medical office building was not in use, no one was affected. The water was off for about three hours while they repaired the line.

Mayor Bailey asked the Council to review the bills. Mr. Bristoll moved that the bills be paid as presented, was seconded by Mrs. Mumford-Pautz and carried unanimously.

Mr. Gross moved that the meeting be adjourned at 7:45 p.m., was seconded by Mr. Bristoll and carried unanimously.
